Taking a full or partial payment online

A homeowner can pay part of a job's balance, such as a deposit, a percentage of the job or whatever the insurance check covers, and the rest stays on the balance due for the next payment.

On this page

Any amount from $0.01 up is accepted, within the card and bank limits your payment provider sets.

There are two ways to take one online, and both need online payments set up for your account in the Payment Provider settings (Settings › Payment Provider):

  • The homeowner pays it in the portal. The amount box on the portal's Payments tab starts at the full balance due, and the homeowner types the amount you agreed instead. Tell them the amount up front: you cannot set it for them ahead of time.
  • Your office charges it for them. Hover over Balance Due under the job value at the top of the project and press Pay balance. You type the amount, pick the payment method and enter the homeowner's payment details, for example while they are on the phone. This takes Create on Payments.

Either way the payment lands on the project's Payments tab by itself, the balance due drops by the amount paid, and the homeowner can open a receipt for it in the portal.

No Payments tab in the portal

The homeowner only sees the tab when the balance is shared with them. Turn on Homeowner can see balance on the project's Customer Portal card, or make showing the balance the default for every job in the Customer Portal settings (Settings › Customer Portal). It also needs at least one payment method turned on for homeowners in your payment settings.

A check or cash payment handed to you in person is not taken here; record it by hand on the project's Payments tab, which is covered in the guide on recording a check or cash payment.

Step by step

  1. To let the homeowner pay, make sure they are invited to the portal and Homeowner can see balance is on in the project's Customer Portal card. Where: the project's Details tab. Needs Modify on Projects.
  2. Tell the homeowner the amount. In the portal they open the project's Payments tab, replace the full balance in Payment Amount with that amount, choose how to pay and press Submit payment.
  3. To charge it yourself instead, hover over Balance Due at the top of the project, press Pay balance, enter the amount and payment details, and submit. Where: the project. Needs Create on Payments.
  4. Check the project's Payments tab: the payment is listed under Received and the balance due has dropped by that amount. Where: the project's Payments tab. Needs View on Payments.

Who can do this

Access in Trussi is a capability granted to a role. If one of these is missing from your role, an account admin can grant it; see roles, permissions and why something is hidden.

  • Create on Payments
  • Modify on Projects
  • View on Payments
