Inviting a homeowner to the portal
A homeowner gets into the portal by being invited, either by hand from their project or automatically when the job reaches a pipeline stage you choose.
On this page
The invitation is a text with a link to the portal's sign-in page, plus an email when the customer has an email address. There is no password: the homeowner signs in with a one-time code sent to that phone number or email.
Before you start
The portal has to be turned on for your account, with Portal Status in the Customer Portal settings (Settings › Customer Portal), which takes Modify on Account. Until it is on, projects have no Customer Portal card. The customer on the project also needs a phone number, because the portal account is tied to it; an invite to a customer without one is refused with a message saying so. The email is optional, and the customer's first email address gets the copy.
Texts need texting set up
The invitation text goes out from your company's texting number. If texting is not set up yet, or the customer once replied STOP to your texts, the card says the text did not go out and the email still goes. A customer who replied STOP gets texts again once they reply START.
After the invite
The card shows the phone and email the invitation went to, when the homeowner last signed in and how many devices they are signed in on. Pressing Resend Invite sends the invitation again to the phone and email now on the customer, which is how to fix a typo in either; once the homeowner has signed in, it tells you they already have an active portal account instead. Use Revoke Sessions to sign them out everywhere, or Disable to turn their access off until you resend the invite.
Inviting automatically
Auto-Invite in the same Customer Portal settings picks a pipeline stage, and every customer whose project reaches it is invited once, by text and email, as long as they have a phone number and were never invited before. An automatic invitation never texts outside 8am to 9pm in the homeowner's time zone; one that lands outside those hours sends only the email, so use Resend Invite on the project if they need the text.
Step by step
- Open the project and find the Customer Portal card in the right-hand column. Where: the project's Details tab.
- Press Invite to Portal. The card says whether the invitation went by text, email or both, and names anything that did not go out.
- Optionally, switch on Homeowner can see balance on the same card so the homeowner sees what they owe and can pay online. The preview under it is exactly what they will see. Needs Modify on Projects.
Who can do this
Access in Trussi is a capability granted to a role. If one of these is missing from your role, an account admin can grant it; see roles, permissions and why something is hidden.
