Signing in with Google or Microsoft

Use a Google or Microsoft work account to sign in to Trussi instead of typing a password, and what to do if it turns you away.

On this page

What these buttons do

At the bottom of the Trussi sign-in screen, below the Sign in button, there is a divider reading or continue with, followed by Continue with Google and Continue with Microsoft.

Choosing one takes you to Google's or Microsoft's own sign-in screen, where you pick or confirm your account just as you would on any other site that offers this. Trussi never sees your Google or Microsoft password. It receives confirmation of who you are and the email address on that account, and nothing else.

This is a way to use an account you already have instead of remembering a separate Trussi password.

They sign you in, they do not sign you up

This is the one thing worth knowing before you click, and the small question mark beside or continue with says the same on screen.

These buttons only work if that exact email address already has a Trussi user. If nobody has invited you to Trussi yet, they will turn you away however many times you try. Ask an admin at your company to invite you, then come back and use the same address.

Trussi will not create an account for you here, and will not take up one of your company's seats on its own.

The first time you use it

The first time you choose one of the two buttons, Trussi looks for a Trussi user with the same email address as the account you just used.

  1. If a Trussi user already holds that address, Trussi connects your Google or Microsoft account to it and signs you in.
  2. If no Trussi user holds that address, you are turned away with a message saying so.

Your provider also has to have verified the address. If Google or Microsoft has not verified the email on the account you picked, Trussi refuses it and asks you to verify it with them first.

Signing in after the first time

Once your account is connected, Trussi recognises the Google or Microsoft account itself and no longer needs to look at the email address at all.

That has a useful side effect. If your work email address changes later, your Google or Microsoft sign-in keeps working, because the connection is to the account rather than to the address it happens to show today.

Microsoft work and school accounts only

Trussi accepts Microsoft work or school accounts. A personal Microsoft account, for example one you set up yourself on an outlook.com or hotmail.com address, is refused even if you have changed the email address on it to look like a work one.

A personal account comes back with a message about the email domain not being allowed. If you see that after choosing Continue with Microsoft, check that you picked your work account rather than a personal one.

There is one more Microsoft case worth knowing about. Trussi accepts a Microsoft address only when your company's Microsoft directory positively confirms that it owns that address's domain. If your directory does not send that confirmation, sign-in is refused as unverified even though the account is an ordinary work account in good standing, and there is nothing you can change on your side to make it pass. If you are confident your Microsoft work account is set up correctly and you still get the unverified message, contact Trussi support rather than trying again.

If it turns you away

  • We couldn't find a Trussi account for that email address. That address has not been invited to Trussi, or your invite used a different one. Ask your administrator to invite you, check which address they used, or sign in with your Trussi email and password.
  • Your provider hasn't verified the email address on that account. Verify the address with Google or Microsoft, then try again.
  • Your Trussi account is inactive. Ask your administrator to reactivate it.
  • Your Trussi account doesn't have access to this workspace yet. Ask your administrator to check your seat and permissions.
  • That sign-in attempt expired or was started somewhere else. Begin again from the sign-in screen rather than reusing an old tab or a saved link.
  • We couldn't finish signing you in with that provider. A temporary problem reaching Google or Microsoft. Try again in a moment.

Your Trussi email and password keep working throughout. Signing in with Google or Microsoft is an additional way in, never a replacement, and nothing about these buttons can lock you out of the password you already have.

On the Trussi mobile app

The Trussi app offers the same two options on its own sign-in screen, and every rule above applies there unchanged: connected the first time, remembered afterwards, and refused for the same reasons.

Choosing Google opens your phone's own Google account picker rather than a window inside the app. Choosing Microsoft opens your phone's browser to Microsoft's sign-in page and returns you to the app afterwards. On Android you may be asked to update Google Play services first.

If you do not see these options in the app, update to the latest version from your app store.

If you do not see the buttons

If neither button appears, sign-in with Google and Microsoft is not switched on for the Trussi site you are using, and the password form is the only way in. This is set for Trussi as a whole rather than company by company, so there is nothing for your administrator to turn on.
